A businessman has been shot dead in an alleged contract killing incident in Juapong on Tuesday night in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region.
Information gathered by myjoyonline.com indicate the late Samuel Nyamado and his wife were returning home after the day’s activities in their provision shop, when they were attacked by armed men.
The widow was reported to have narrated that the armed men declined an offer by the deceased to trade their lives with the daily sales.
The gang made of about 3 men responded they had no interest in their money but were missioned to assassinate the deceased, who they consequently shot in the back leading to his untimely death.
The incident sparked a wild protest in the early hours of Wednesday, where some irate youth mounted a roadblock on the Accra – Ho highway with burning tires, to register their anger at what they described as weak policing in the district.
According to the protesters, though the police were called at the time of the incident, they failed to respond to the distress call.
The violence protest led to a heavy traffic jam on the busy highway for several hours.
The police, however, managed to clear the road for traffic to flow and restored calm in Juapong.
The wife of the deceased who was molested by the assailants has been admitted at the Volta River Authority Hospital in Akosombo for treatment.
The Volta Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Corporal Prince Dogbatse, in an interview with myjoyonline.com, condemned the protest and debunk allegations that the businessman was killed because the police could not respond to a distress call.
“Those are mere allegations, that do not warrant for the youth to go on a rampage”, he said and entreated the youth to desist from engaging in such activities since it could be orchestrated by miscreants to divert police attention.
“We just finished investigations into a similar incident in Sogakofe, and we found out that one of the culprits was actively involved in organizing a similar protest aftermath of the murder of the late assembly-member.”
He, however, indicated investigations have begun into the incident and implored the public to partner the police to unravel the mystery behind the alleged murder of the businessman.
