Ayawaso West Wuogon MP Lydia Seyram Alhassan has set up a relief and poverty alleviation fund to support some squatters of Shiashie whose homes were ravaged by fire on Friday night.

Over 500 squatters were displaced by the ravaging fire, destroying property and belongings worth thousands of Ghana cedis.

Following the fire outbreak, the MP provided mattresses and secured the Shiashie Presbyterian Church as a place of shelter for the squatters.

Mrs Alhassan who donated over 500 bags of rice, buckets and an undisclosed amount of money to the squatters also appealed to the residents of the area and to support the victims.

“As you can see, I have provided foods, buckets water and given them some money. As an MP I will do whatever I need to do to help my constituents but I need your support.

“What I have given them cannot support them for long. Some of them are hairdressers, some are dressmakers, phone repairs, and their livelihood is gone. I am appealing to appealing those beyond this constituency to support.”

She also revealed that a relief fund has been set up to assist the squatters.

“We have been able to raise ¢20,000 to support them but that’s is woefully inadequate. Businessmen, NGO’s should come and help. This is a problem that has affected all of us and we must help,” she said.

She also thanked the faith organization for their support.

“I want to thank the faith-based organisations for the support as an MP. The Presby church has been tremendous in helping these victims.
