Tems to be honoured at 2024 Billboard Women in Music

Nigerian musician Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, will receive the Breakthrough Award at the 2024 Billboard Women in Music.

The event, scheduled for Wednesday, March 6, recognises women making significant contributions to the music business.

It will be held at the YouTube Theater at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, California and will stream on March 7. 

Tems is being honoured for her work and success in the past few years since gaining international attention.

Tems to be honoured at 2024 Billboard Women in Music

The Nigerian singer-songwriter and record producer is now a five-time Grammy-nominated artiste and a one-time winner, an Oscar-nominated artiste and has five Billboard Hot 100 entries.

Tems’ first Grammy nomination was in 2021 when Wizkid’s global hit ‘Essence’ was nominated.

She was nominated a year later for three Grammys including Best Rap Song, Best Melodic Rap Song and Best Album of the Year – all for her feature on Future’s Wait For You.

The track won the Best Melodic Rap Song award.

For the 2024 Grammys, Tems has also been once again nominated this time under Best Song Written for Visual Media category for her work on the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever song ‘Lift Me Up’ by Rihanna. Tems is credited as a songwriter on the track which entered the Hot 100 at No. 2 in late 2022.

A year ago, the song also brought Tems and her co-writers an Oscar nod for Best Original Song.

Meanwhile, according to Billboard, the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards honorees demonstrate the degree to which music has become a global enterprise. 

There are honorees from Australia (Kylie Minogue), England (Charli XCX), South Korea (NewJeans), Nigeria (Tems), Brazil (Luisa Sonza), Puerto Rico (Young Miko) as well as the continental U.S. (Maren Morris, Ice Spice and Victoria Monét).

Tracee Ellis Ross will host the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards and it will feature musical performances and honors women powerhouses who are shaping the music landscape.
